Abstract

Our point of departure is Maleczki’s (2006; 2007) formal-semantic theory on É. Kiss’s (1998) identificational versus information focus, and on the related topic of question–answer alternatives. We consider the factor-set based essence of her solution to be extendable to a cognitive pragmasemantic analysis in which "worldlets" of interlocutors’ knowledges/beliefs, desires/interests and intentions within their information states are taken into consideration. The distinguished thesis in the paper is that the intensional profile of wh-questions is the same as that of yes/no questions, with the differences to be attributed to some "cursor set".

Gábor Alberti (DSc) is a professor at the University of Pécs, where he is head of the Department of Linguistics, the Doctoral School of Linguistics and the ℜeALIS Theoretical, Computer and Cognitive Linguistics Research Group. He specializes in logic based formal pragmasemantic approaches.

Mónika Dóla, University of Pécs, Department of Linguistics; ℜeALIS Theoretical, Computational and Cognitive Linguistics Research Team

Mónika Dóla (PhD) is an associate professor (senior lecturer) at the Department of Linguistics of the University of Pécs, and a member of the ℜeALIS Theoretical, Computer and Cognitive Linguistics Research Group. Her work concerns functional and constructional approaches.
