Naive Semantics

László Kálmán

Abstract

The author argues that a common feature of post-generativist linguistic theories is that they do not attempt to formulate regularities in the most general form possible, and derive the actual linguistic phenomena from those general principles using long, complex derivations. The article focuses on those consequences of this turn or difference which affect the relationship of grammar proper to semantics (e.g., consequences regarding the principle of compositionality).

Author Biography

László Kálmán, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Research Institute of Linguistics; MTA–ELTE Department of Theoretical Linguistics

For the last 30 years or so, László Kálmán has been a researcher at the Research Institute for Linguistics and an assistant professor at the MTA and ELTE's joint Department of Theoretical Linguistics. During this time, he also spent two years teaching at the University of Amsterdam, and he word for two years at Mindmaker Ltd., a private company researching artificial intelligence. His main areas of research are theories of grammar, formal semantics and computational linguistics. He has major contributions to linguistic education at school (including the development of teaching materials), and he has been constantly active in the popularization of science.
